Villa Mosca is in Chiavazza, a district of Biella, and before belonging to the Mosca family, it used to be a convent connected to that of San Gerolamo, now owned by the Sell family.
The building features two parts renovated in different periods: an XVIII century structure frescoed by the brothers Bernardino and Fabrizio Galliari, and another dating back to the late XIX century.
On May 18, 1859, Giuseppe Garibaldi stopped there, during the transfer of his troops to Lombardy.
The garden
Villa Mosca is surrounded by an impressive romantic garden. It was built in the XIX century, with its focal point on the hill of San Gerolamo, overlooking the adjacent city of Biella. The original layout was later partially modified as a landscape park.
Among the most beautiful gardens in the area, it is rich in tree varieties and botanical species.
Chiavazza
Chiavazza is an eastern district of Biella. It remained administratively independent until 1940 when it was included in the municipality of Biella and connected to the city by the bridge over the Cervo River. Its main street, which leads to Vigliano Biellese, is full of historic villas, including Villa Mosca.
During the annual carnival, the biggest bean festival in the world is held on the parish square – it is also included in the Guinness Book of Records.
