Acer opalus Mill.

The tree is 18 meters tall and its circumference is around 5 meters. A tree hailing from southern Europe, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkans, which belongs to the family of the Aceraceae. A thermophilic and basophilic plant, which tolerates calcareous soils, while it is sensitive to water stagnation and aridity. It is possible to find this plant in the northern area of Italy and along the Appennines, till Umbria and southern Italy except Sardinia. The maximum elevation reached is around 1,400 m. The wood is refined and it is used in woodworking and violin making.
