Pyrus communis L.

The tree is 15 meters tall and its circumference is around 4.05 meters, which are remarkable dimensions for a pear tree. It is a tree or a great shrub which hails from Europe, Asia and Africa and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae. It is sensitive to extremely cold and hot weathers and to aridity. The plant prefers calcareous soils rich in nourishing sources. It is possible to find it in all the Italian regions. The fruits of the wild species have a bitter taste, but they are cropped and left to mature on hay like loquats. The wood was anciently used in xylography and cabinet-making.
