The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise covers an area of more than 198.000 acres of protected areas.
The mountain ranges included in the Park range between 2.900 and 7.200 ft above sea level, with different landscapes, rounded peaks and rocky slopes similar to a typical alpine environment. The Sangro River with its tributaries flows across the central part, while other streams (Giovenco, Melfa, and Volturno) are found in the outer areas of the park.
It is possible to observe different species of animals such as Abruzzo chamois, Marsican brown bears, wolves, deers, and golden eagles.

Flora

The flora in the park is very rich. The iris (Iris marsica) undoubtedly stands out, blooming between May and June; numberless and colourful orchids, including most beautiful, large, and rare ones like lady’s-slipper orchids (Cypripedium calceolus), which bloom in the most hidden corners, between May and June. Then there are black pines (Pinus nigra), bog pines (Pinus mugo), and silver birches (Betula pendula); the predominant plants in the Park are European beeches (Fagus sylvatica), which occupy more than 60% of the entire surface with many centuries-old specimens as well. Beyond the edge of the forests, there are junipers (Juniperus communis nana), European blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus), and bearberries (ArctostaphyIos uva-ursi).

There are several species of gramineous and graminoid plants, great yellow gentians (Gentiana lutea), cyclamen, primroses, violets, anemones, scilla, lilies, and orchids.
