Parco Storico di Monte Sole covers an area of about 6,300 hectares, between the municipalities of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana Morandi, on the territory between the rivers Reno and Setta, in the province ofBologna. It was instituted in 1989, in an area which was part of the terrible massacre of Monte Sole during the Second World War Sole made by the nazi-fascist soldiers in 1944, who killed hundreds of civilians. The institution of this protected area, apart from keeping safe and giving value to the environmental patrimony, aimed to keep alive the memory of that piece of Italy’s history, of the happenings of the partisan brigade Stella Rossa, by spreading a peace culture directed to future generations. In the park there is also a wide variety of flowers: the northern slopes of the park are dominated by Ostrya carpinifolia, while the Southern ones by Quercus robur and Castanea sativa, and at the highest altitudes Fagus sylvatica.
