Pyrus sp. L.
This specimen has a height of about 8 m and a trunk circumference of around 2,2 m.
It belongs to the Rosaceae family and it hails from the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). It is a plant which tolerates well low temperatures and limestone, but it is sensitive to aridity, water stagnations and a bacteria (Erwinia amylovora) which causes a well-known pathology called “colpo di fuoco batterico”. The pollination is entomofil, so it is normally associate to the cultivation of pears and apiculture.
At world level, China is the first country in it’s cultivation, then there’s Italy, where the production is centred in the provinces of Modena, Bologna and Ferrara.
The pear, rich in fibres, contains pectin which forms a viscous substance with the ability to bind with bad cholesterol present in our organism and facilitate its expulsion.
The pear cultivation dates back to 350 years before Christ in all the area of Magna Grecia.
The phytosanitary conditions are scarce.
