Populus nigra ‘Italica’
The tree is 28 metres tall and its circumference is of about 3.30 metres.
It belongs to the Salicaceae family and it is a native species of Southern-Central Europe and Oriental Asia. The plant tolerates well wet soils and long water stagnations. It is quite rustic, but sensitive to fungus infections, especially in period of water scarcity.
In Italy it is spread all over the nation.
Poplars are often planted in rows along borders, entrance alleys or along roads. Thanks to its resistance to wind and its columnar behaviour, its one of the most employed trees for the realisation of windshield hedges.
Its dried gems and cortex are rich in essential oils useful in the pharmaceutical industry. The wood is used for paper and matches production or to make semi-finished products (es. plywood, veneered products).
