Comabbio Lake – Cycle-Pedestrian Trail

Comabbio Lake is a small body of water of glacial origin. It can be found in the Province of Varese, between Lake Maggiore and Lake of Varese – the latter used to be connected with it. It covers some 9 km and it’s a natural oasis rich with water plants, with a maximum depth of 27 ft.
Due to its small size, it usually freezes over in the winter, thus becoming a huge skating rink. It is thought that in ancient times, Comabbio Lake used to be connected with Lake Monate: such theory would explain the presence of several underground aquifers.
From a naturalistic point of view, the lake offers a rich variety of fauna and flower species, thanks also to the ban on motor navigation. Known for its abundance of fish (pikes, zanders, common sunfish, common rudds, carps, tenches, and eels), its southern shore, known as Corgeno bay, is a refuge and nesting area for many species of water birds and ducks. A large expanse of lotus flowers, blooming in summer (born from a single plant inserted some time ago by some enthusiasts), contributes to making this place a wonderful one.
A cycle/pedestrian trail runs around the lake. It starts in Ternate park and winds for about 12.5 km, also over the lake thanks to a 1.640 ft long wooden platform suspended on the water. Such trail is undoubtedly a most unique one, immersed in an enchanting natural landscape.
