The MAPP is a contemporary art museum located in the former Paolo Pini Psychiatric Hospital in Milan; it was created in 1993 by Teresa Melorio and Enza Baccei, with the aid of the Mental Health Department of the Niguarda Cà Granda Hospital, and the artistic direction by Marco Meneguzzo. Some renowned Milan art galleries participated in this project as well.

This new museum transformed the former psychiatric hospital into a gathering venue, where “creating art” is an opportunity for e exchanging ideas and languages among professionals and people suffering from mental illness; that is to say, the sharing of cultural experiences and artistic visions between the so-called “healthy” and “sick” people, can contribute to establishing some real communication where there used to be none at all for years.

The work of arts on the walls of the former asylum are an expression of the intrinsic value that every single human being carries, even when hampered by a serious illness in the body or in the mind.

MAPP means that a true transformation of a healing process can also be achieved through a specific aesthetic quality of the space that shows the richness of symbolic values of the human being in all its depth. The MAPP and Art Workshops Project represent an innovative experience, in constant evolution: new artists work together with new guests, and this will lead to new ways of exploring the universal language of art.
