Vicarello Castle is a medieval stronghold, in the part of Maremma near Grosseto, about 13 miles from the sea. It was built in 1100 but first mentioned in history when the people from Siena used it as a defensive and observation facility, in the XIII century.
Since the mid-XVI century, the whole structure has been privately owned: it was neglected and then restored several times, while at the end of the last century all the renovation works were finally brought to their completion, thus bringing the castle back to its former glory.
Today, the castle is used as a farm stay facility.
THE VILLA
In the Renaissance period, redevelopment works were carried out which resulted in the overlapping of stylistic elements of the time with pre-existing ones dating back to the medieval period. When Vicarello castle was originally built, it included the remains of two former square towers, one of which is better preserved, and it still features stone block walls.
The buildings inside the complex are structured around an internal courtyard, which can be accessed through a peculiar arched door.
