Garden of the Archaeological Museum

Since 1879, the National Archaeological Museum of Florence has been housed in the XVII century Palazzo della Crocetta, built by Cosimo de ‘Medici on one of his properties. This facility was actually built for his sister, Princess Maria Maddalena de’ Medici, suffering from severe physical disabilities.

In the museum, there are several Etruscan and Roman finds from Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria, as well as Egyptian and Greek items, many of which found in Etruscan tombs.

In the garden, at the entrance, between 1900 and 1903 several Etruscan tombs from Tuscia were reconstructed, using the typical mounds dug into the rock, cube or well-shaped, and even with simple sarcophagi, in a sort of open-air museum.

This garden is truly a small oasis, with an Italian geometric design, lawns bordered by flower beds, boxwood, roses, iris and other beautiful flowers.
