The cypresses of San Quirico D’Orcia

The famous cypress trees of San Quirico d’Orcia grow on a low and soft hill, among several similar reliefs between Val d’Orcia and Ombrone Valley; at their foot runs a section of Via Cassia, in the locality of “I Triboli”.
These evocative trees are among the most loved and photographed sights of Val d’Orcia and a true icon of Tuscany. They actually grow in two separate groups: the first one features a rhomboid-shaped grove (geographical coordinates: 43 ° 03′45.62 ″ N 11 ° 33 ′ 31.86 ″ E), while the second is along a dirt road that leads to a farm, surrounding the latter with two semicircles.
The cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) originally comes from Asia Minor: it was imported into Tuscany many centuries before Christ. It was much loved by the Etruscans as well as by the painters of the Renaissance.
