This Oasis is in the Municipality of Sesto Fiorentino, in the Province of Florence.
This humid area is part of a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT5140011) and is a Special Protection Area (SPA IT5140011).
The creation of the 5 acres of the marshy environment in Firenze’s countryside, was possible thanks to the collaboration between Tuscany WWF and the University of Florence.
In fact, in 1994 Tuscany WWF showed the University of Florence how badly the construction of the new University Scientific Center in Sesto Fiorentino had impacted with the local wetland.
Amphibious species, in particular, had been seriously threatened, including Triturus carnifex (Italian crested newt), Lissotriton vulgaris (smooth newt), Bufo viridis (green toad), Hyla intermedia (Italian tree frog), Pelophylax esculentus (edible frog), and Pelophylax lessonae (pool frog). Bird species had been negatively impacted as well, as many of them had always been able to find shelter here during their migrations.
All in all, that’s exactly why a “compensation” project led to the reconstruction of new habitats, which today is painstakingly managed by the WWF.
The local flora includes the typical of marsh plants, such as Ranunculus trichophyllus (threadleaf crowfoot), Iris pseudocorus (yellow lily), Typha spp. (bulrush), and Phragmites australis (common reed).
