Renetta Grigia di Torriana apple takes its name from the peculiarities of its skin, remarkably “rusty”, and from the town of Barge (“Torriana” is one of its hamlets), where it is grown and where it actually originated.
It is recognized as a Traditional Italian Food Product. It is produced in Piedmont and, in particular, in the municipalities of Barge, Bagnolo and Cavour. It’s also a Slow Food Presidium among the old apple varieties of Piedmont.
The flowering period starts in the second week of April, while the harvest takes place around half October. The fruit has a flattened shape, a medium-size, a short and medium-low peduncle, a rough, rusty skin with large and rusty lenticels. The pulp has a coarse texture, a sweet-sour taste and white-cream colour.
The plant is very rustic, resistant and capable of adapting extremely well to organic production techniques. The fruits can be successfully stored, even outside the fridge, until the end of February, beginning of March. This fruit is also particularly suitable for cooking.
Renetta Grigia di Torriana apple is part of the “Consortium for the Protection of the Renetta Grigia Apple of Torriana and Typical Valle Po Fruits”, which includes:
