Chiablese Palace

Chiablese Palace was built before the XV century. Belonging to Monsignor di Racconigi, it became the residence of Maurizio di Savoia, a former cardinal, and of his wife Ludovica, in 1642.
The second son of Carlo Emanuele III, Benedetto Maurizio, Duke of Chiablese, and other members of the royal family subsequently lived there. It later became the seat of the Royal Court offices.

In 1753, King Carlo Emanuele III contracted architect Benedetto Alfieri to redevelop the residence and redesign the facade adding the majestic staircase to the main floor. The palace was then filled with valuable furnishings, stuccos, boiseries, mirrors and exquisitely painted doors.

During the Napoleonic period, the palace was enriched by the third apartment in neoclassical style and became the seat of the governor Camillo Borghese and his wife Paolina Borghese.

Acquired once again by the Savoy, Margherita di Savoia was born here in 1851 – she was to become the first Queen of Italy.

During the Second World War, the palace was damaged by the bombs and the nit became a State Property.

The building, now completely restored, houses the Regional Directorate for Cultural and Landscape Heritage of Piedmont, together with the offices of the Superintendencies.
