In 1857 Luigi Leone began to produce small, delicious, intense and fragrant pastilles in his confectionery in Alba. In particular, the violet-scented Leone gumdrops soon became the favourite candies of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, so much so that they were renamed in his honour as “Senateurs”.

Turin, which would soon become the capital city of Italy, had conquered the title of “the capital of sweetness”, with its many cafes, patisseries and artisan confectioneries. Among those popular establishments, Luigi Leone’s confectionery offered his famous “Pastiglie”, a rainbow of irresistible flavours, including arquebuse and fernet liquors, as well as fragrant cinnamon.

At the beginning of the last century, the Leone brand became a synonym of the absolute value of excellence and indisputable high quality.

In 1934, the company was taken over by the entrepreneur Giselda Balla Monero, nicknamed “Leonessa” (“female Lion”) for her indomitable personality; she invested in advertising, improved the packaging of candies and further promoted the unique and unmistakable “Marca Leone”.

A brand which still evoke a long tradition, but which also speaks of novelty and the future; such priceless heritage is very well treasured by the Monero family, who proudly continues offering top-quality and unique products. So, the story goes on, now featuring new fragrances, ancient recipes and irresistible ideas.
Painstaking care has always been given to the choice of the ingredients: the round gentle hazelnuts from Langhe, peppermint from Piedmont, liquorice from sunny Calabria, as well as Kordofan Gum Arabica, a secret and special substance from Sudan, the finest varieties of cocoa from Central America, vanilla beans from Madagascar and Mexico.

Excellence is in not in a hurry, and producing Pastiglie Leone is a long a thorough process which eventually delivers the very best quality to the consumers.
