Garzaia Val Bormida WWF Refuge
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
Garzaia Val Bormida is in the province of Asti (in the southern area of the Municipality of Sessame), and it is managed by the WWF. Established in 1991, this protected area covers 1.5 acres and hosts a large colony of grey herons (Ardea cinerea).
Being the only protected riparian area along the Bormida River, it has an important value for the preservation of the natural environment. It is also home to hydrophilic tree species, such as some majestic Salix alba and Populus spp.
Birdwatching can be enjoyed from afar, for instance along the state highway 339, where a special panel has been placed for this purpose. In fact, Garzaia is not usually open to the public and can only be accessed for professional research, previously authorized by the WWF.
