Lama degli Ulivi Botanical Garden

Lama degli Ulivi Botanical Garden covers 7.5 acres in the Capitanio Stefano nursery, along the dry bed (called “lama”) of a local stream.
Inside the garden, there is also an ancient oil mill dug in the rock and two finely frescoed churches: Santa Cecilia’s and the one called “Jacovella”. Dry stone walls from ancient times and several steps carved into the stone are still visible, as well as centuries-old caves and dugouts.
To protect this important piece of the cultural heritage of Puglia, the proceeds from the entrance tickets to this garden are used to fund the fresco restoration in the churches.
Botanical Collections
There are more than 3.000 botanical species in this garden, including three plants typical of the Apulian landscape and the Mediterranean scrub, such as the secular olive trees (Olea europaea), carobs (Ceratonia siliqua), figs (Ficus carica), and caper bushes (Capparis spinosa). All the world continents are represented, including the silk floss tree (Chorisia speciosa) and the blue Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) from Central America, the Queensland walnut (Macadamia integrifolia) from Australia, and the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora), from Asia.
