Rifugio Mellitto WWF Oasis
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
This oasis covers more than 15 acres in the Municipality of Grumo Appula, in the province of Bari. It was established by the WWF in 1992 to preserve the environmental heritage of the Murgia Plateau. It is located at 1.312 ft above sea level, in Sevella, a place which used to be full of centuries-old oak woods. Part of it was reforested by its former owner, in the early 1970s.
Currently, the oasis has been abandoned for the specific purpose of allowing natural reforestation, thus regaining its natural space in the Murge territory. The local flora includes wonderful specimens of Quercus trojana, Quercus pubescens, and Quercus frainetto.
The fauna features many nocturnal and diurnal raptors, hedgehogs, weasels, stone martens, and foxes; among the reptiles, there are Hermann’s tortoises, ratsnakes, green whip snakes, and four-lined snakes.
