Bosco delle Pianelle Regional Nature Reserve was established in 2002; it covers more than 2.977 acres at altitudes between 1.125 ft and 1.594 ft above sea level. The highest hills are those of Monte Pianelle (which dominates a large part of the Ionian Sea and is currently used as an Air Force radar station at 1.568 ft), Corno della Strega (1.469 ft), Belvedere del Vuolo (1.407), and Piazza dei Lupi (1.358 ft); the highest point in the whole area is Masseria Mongelli.
This territory also features several caves which used to shelter the local brigrands in the XIX century. The reserve is particularly suitable for those who want to take a trip into the countryside, sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. In fact, it is possible to go hiking or biking in the woods, thanks to more than 10 miles of paths and several picnic areas.
Several animal species happily thrive in the reserve, such as weasels, badgers and foxes; the local flora includes juniper (Juniperus spp.), myrtle (Myrtus communis), common medlars (Mespilus germanica), and many wild orchids.
