Gibellina Nuova

Gibellina, together with Poggioreale, Salaparuta, and Montevago, was one of the municipalities most affected by the violent earthquake that hit the Belice (a vast area of western Sicily), in 1968. The reconstruction took place more than 10 miles away, on a large flat area.

Ludovico Corrao, the former mayor of Gibellina, seized the opportunity to rebuild also the very history of what was originally just a small village of peasants and serfs, intertwined with great cultural hubs that had been created in that very area in the previous centuries. He thus consulted several world-renowned architects and artists, such as Pietro Consagra and Alberto Burri, to rethink e restore what is now one of the national hubs with the highest number and the most impressive production of contemporary works of art.

The “Grande Creto” is part of this heritage; it was built in the old town f Gibellina by Burri, in memory of the earthquake that had destroyed it. This massive project, built between 1984 and 1989, encompasses what is left of the old country. With a labyrinth of concrete blocks about 5.2-ft high and 6.5 to 9.8-wide furrows, it stretches along the old road layout. More than half of the original project, which included 21.7 acres, has now been completed.

Nuova Gibellina, on the other hand, is made of works of arts created by artists and architects who wanted to leave their mark on a landscape that’s constantly changing and increasing its wealth of highly-acclaimed masterpieces.
The construction of the main nucleus dates back to the 70s, designed to accommodate some 40.000 residents.
