Cittadella del Vino (“Wine Citadel”) of the Mezzacorona group and home to the former cooperative winery established in 1904, is in the Municipality of Mezzocorona, on Piana Rotaliana: a plain enclosed between the banks of the Adige and the Noce Rivers.
Today, the Citadel is the largest wine complex in Europe, with almost 5.000 acres of vines (divided into 14 cultivars) and 1.500 local winemakers.
The main building houses winemaking and bottling cellars, offices, a commercial area, an auditorium and an exhibition facility. It is spread over 30 acres and has a front facade of some 1.640-ft long. It was designed by the architect Alberto Cecchetto, who devised it as a glass and aluminum embankment stretching into the Adige River valley.
Today, the Citadel is acknowledged not only as a wine production facility and marketplace but also as a splendid example of contemporary architecture: an industrial area turned into a beautiful place in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape and territory.
The company cultivates only single and pure grape varieties, including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Muller Thurgau; the employed techniques guarantee high quality and thorough respect for the natural environment. Copper and sulfur are wisely used, with painstaking monitoring of the grape health; responsible use of water and other natural resources has always been adopted, as well as technical grassing, manual harvesting, wastewater treatment, and thorough collection and recycling of any production waste. The Citadel is also equipped with state-of-the-art underground wine cellars.
