This oasis stretches to the municipalities of Guardea, Alviano, Montecchio, and Civitella d’Agliano. This 2.224-acre area is located within a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT5220011) and is a Special Protection Area (SPA IT5220024). The birth of this wetland followed the damming of the Tiber River at the end of the 1960s. Later on, given the importance of this place for its rich biodiversity, the Umbria Region put a ban on hunting all over the area.

Since 1990, the WWF has been managing this reserve, safeguarding the typical environments of the wetlands and recreating long-lost aquatic environments. Every year, a multitude of birds appears in the oasis -a true feast for birdwatching enthusiasts. Among the avifaunal species, there are little bitterns, great white herons, black-winged tits, and ospreys.

The local fauna also includes catfish, common carps, Italian crested newts and agile frogs; among the mammals, there are coypus, badgers, porcupines, foxes, and wild boars. Squirrels have appeared quite recently.

The vegetation is particularly developed in the hygrophilous forest made of Alnus glutinosa (black alders), Populus spp. (poplars), and Salix spp < / em> (willows).
