Alabaster EcoMuseum

More than two millennia have passed since the Etruscans began processing it, but alabaster, despite several predicaments, is still produced in Volterra; although it is not the main source of income for the local economy as it used to be in recent past, it is undoubtedly still the most iconic element of the local culture and history.
Today, there are few artisan shops left in the historic city centre, but all of them offer very high-quality products. A handful of people is therefore entrusted with preserving a centuries-old tradition and revamping such exquisite craftsmanship.
Since the beginning of the 1980s, alabaster production awareness has made its way among the experts, acknowledging the true excellence of Volterra all over the world: all those efforts have also given birth to a project for the construction of an Ecomuseum for collecting and preserving the heritage, the culture, and the traditions that this peculiar craftsmanship.
