Sant’Anna Arresi is a tourist town named after the patron saint of the town and the “nuraghe” (the main type of ancient megalithic structures in Sardinia, developed during the Nuragic Age – between 1900 and 730 B.C.) in the centre of the town. The current settlement was established in 1700 with the first group of rural abodes erected around the abovementioned megalithic structure.
Sant’Anna Arresi is mostly known for the promontory of Porto Pino and the seaside resort, which features white sands stretching along 2.5 miles between the ponds of Maestrale Is Brebeis. Right there, several species of birds live and thrive, including flamingos, herons, black-winged stilts.
Of remarkable interest is also the local pine forest, of about 222 acres, home to Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis), cade juniper (Juniperus oxicedrus), Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), and thorny oaks (Quercus coccifera).
Every summer, the main festival of Sant’Anna Arresi is celebrated with a procession, tributes paid to the statue of the patron saint, and folk music by local musicians and buskers.
The most famous social event, however, is “On the border between Sardinia and jazz”: the jazz festival that has attracted famous musicians from all over the world for more than 20 years; this festival takes place between August and September.
