Bertani Winery

The Bertani winery was founded in 1857 by the two brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani, in Quinto di Valpantena, north of Verona; Gaetano was already an expert in the art of winemaking, having learned new techniques from Professor Guyot, in France.

Following the unification of Italy, Bertani was born with a strong desire to represent the nation with a centuries-old culture of winemaking: its owners’ commitment and passion earned the Bertani brand an official excellence award in 1923: the patent issued by the Italian Royal House. In 1870, the Academy of Agriculture, Arts and Commerce of Verona acknowledged Bertani as a model farm, especially regarding the introduction of monoculture vineyards and the use of new cultivation techniques.

The quality of their wines has always been appreciated also abroad for its remarkable refinement – Bertani Soave was even on the menu served at the coronation of George VI of England, in 1937.

The vineyards are set in most prized wine-growing areas of Italy: their excellent grapes are used for famous wines like Valpolicella, Soave, and Amarone.

Agronomic and cultural practices take place in absolute harmony with the surrounding environment, while production is never artificially boosted, nor stressed; any intervention to the natural development of plants would be, in fact, totally useless, given the unique and mild climate of the various production areas.

The headquarters of the company can be found in the splendid Villa Novare, in Negrar; all around it, in the very heart of Valpolicella, there is a splendid amphitheatre of 544 acres, 160 of which are used for vineyards. The latter are surrounded by the natural environment featuring wooded areas, olive trees and green meadows; there are also two lakes and several springs.
Valpolicella has a mild climate, which guarantees well-balanced temperatures and rainfall throughout the year, due to the protection from the north winds offered by the Lessini Mountains, as well as the presence of Lake Garda and its Mediterranean-like landscape with several vineyards, cypresses and olive trees.

The production area of Soave is set in the Eastern part of the hill range in the province of Verona, and it is mostly made of green and evocative landscapes, with castles, old churches, bell towers and beautiful villas testament to the ancient wealth of this territory.

To the north-east of Verona, on the other hand, Valpantena is a pre-alpine valley in the central part of the Lessini Mountains, with an ancient agricultural vocation, acknowledged since ancient Roman times. It features a lot of iron in its soil, excellent and prolonged sun exposure, as well as an optimal temperature range between day and night.
