Buggiano Castle

The small village of Buggiano Castello, at 587 ft while probably dating back to Roman times, is located on a hill overlooking Valdinievole and offers a beautiful view of the nearby Colle di Buggiano and Massa.

In recent years, it has attracted an increasing number of tourists and visitors thanks to the biennial opening of the private gardens of the village – such official event is known as “The countryside within the walls”.

Thanks to a particularly favourable climate, it is possible to cultivate various species of citrus fruits, which have given Buggiano the name of the “Village of Citrus”.
On the other hand, the traditional cultivation of small vegetable gardens seems to have its roots in the Middle Ages, when the inhabitants of the Castle used to cultivate what they needed on daily basis, in particular vegetables and aromatic herbs (leaving bulk cultivation in the fields outside the walls).

With love and true passion, the locals now open their gardens to the visitors, making this village a real green jewel of Valdinievole.

The Monastery of the Castle also includes a large green area made of terraced gardens. The recent restoration and the new irrigation system have allowed the creation of a large green area, in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment and extremely flexible in terms of gardening.
By optimizing the terraces, several spaces could be obtained on multiple levels, which can be used as decorative gardens, pergolas, orchards, and also as a most beautiful location for outdoor events. The careful design of the irrigation systems also allowed the construction of ponds and fountains.
