Foresta Calvello

Foresta Regionale di Calvello is located in the municipality of Campagna, in roe province of Salerno, it extends on a surface of about 86 hectares and there is a difference in altitude which varies from 300 to 997 mt. above the sea level. All the area is characterised by mountain elevations which include Monte Calvello, located on the Western extremity of Monti Picentini, on whose steep slopes  there is this state-owned forest. Walking on the old mule track of Sant’Elmo, it is possible to find Turkey oak forests alternated with pastures in which there are wild tree species, indicating that the area was once inhabited by men. Going down from the mountain top  there are oaks, bushes and graminoids. The main arboreal species  are  Melastro, Perastro, Turkey and downy oaks, poplars, Neapolitan maples, manna ashes, black horn beams, holm oaks, checkertrees; rosehips, wisterias, sage, Spain broom tree, asparagus, holly. Also the fauna is varied, there are calandra larks, peregrine falcons, collared flycatcher, woodlarks, fieldfares, woodcocks, turtle doves, thrushes, grey partridges, quails, larks, ravens and wolves.  During the walk, when done in suitable times, it is possible to find mushrooms, wild berries, truffles and officinal plants.
