Campo del Sole

Campo del Sole is a permanent sculpture exhibition featuring several works of art created between 1985 and 1989. The famous painter Pietro Cascella and the sculptor Mauro Berrettini, together with the Swiss artist Cordelia von den Steinen, had the bright idea of setting up an open-air museum in this carefully chosen location. In fact, the famous battle of Trasimeno, when Hannibal defeated the Roman army, was fought nearby.

The sculptures were made by different artists, positioned in a spiralling arrangement and wrapping themselves around the solar disk in the centre.
Taken as a whole, this highly evocative place may remind us of Stonehenge, especially when it comes to several vertical elements extremely prominent throughout the exhibition. Each of those straight boulders (made of the local “serena” stone) was carved in the workshop of Giulio and Mauro Borgia di Tuono.

Twenty-eight artists were involved in this project and each one of them interpreted the very exhibition according to his/her own style, creativity, taste and vision. The artists featured are were Kengiro Azuma, Iginio Baldieri, Mauro Berrettini, Rinaldo Bigi, Pietro Cascella, Adolfo Innocenti, Mauro Staccioli, Joe Tilson, Cordelia von den Steinen, Anselmo Giardini, Pasquale Liberatore, Luigi Mainolfi, Friedrich Volker Marten, Costantino Nivola, Joshin Ogata, Joaquìn Roca-Rey, Francesco Somaini, Alì Traoré, Nicola Carrino, Aurelio De Felice, Leo Lionni, Idetoshi Nagasawa, Annibale Oste, Giò Pomodoro, Jørgen Haugen Sørensen, François Stahly, and Valentino Tubbiani. The very structures at the entrance of the exhibition were created by Kuo-Wei Tu.
