Capra Matilda WWF Affiliated Oasis

The Oasis of Capra Matilda is on the slopes of Mount Amiata, in the province of Grosseto, and reaches the municipalities of Roccalbegna and Semproniano. In that place, rich in woods and pastures, a private farm and a farm-stay facility affiliated to the WWF has been created.
The intriguing funny name of this place was chosen to honour the very first goat raised on the farm (“Capra” means “Goat”).

154.5 acres feature the cultivation cereals, natural meadows, and thick woods, with true respect for the local biodiversity and many endangered animal species which have found a sort of safe haven right there. Capra Matilda is also part of the “Panda Farm circuit” and can accommodate tourists in four double bedrooms.

The woodland landscapes include mainly Quercus cerris (Turkey oak), Quercus pubescens (downy oaks), Fraxinus ornus (ornielli), Pyrus pyraster (wild pear), Malus sylvestris (wild apple trees), Juniperus spp. (junipers), Sorbus spp. (rowans), Prunus spp. (plum trees), and Erica spp. (heather). In the undergrowth and along the natural hedges between the fields, there are Anemone spp. (anemones), Cyclamen spp. (cyclamen), Asphodelus spp. (asphodels), and several species of orchids.

The farm is an excellent example of anthropic activity developed in full harmony with nature. According to the owners, Antonio and Sonia Pastorelli, protecting and recovering native breeds is vital both for respecting biodiversity and ensuring the production of very high-quality food.

Among the animals raised in the wild, there are “Cinta Senese” and “Macchiaolo Maremmano” pigs, “Amiata” donkeys, “Amiata” and “Crete Senesi” sheep, wild goats from Montecristo and cows from Maremma.

Many wild animals also live in the Oasis such as wild boars, roe deers, foxes, porcupines, badgers, and hares. There are many birds like sparrows, tits, finches, goldfinches, magpies, jackdaws, as well as various species of hawks that come from the nearby cliffs of WWF Bosco dei Rocconi Oasis (they usually nest there). The presence of small artificial ponds created for livestock is also ideal for amphibians and reptiles: the coveted prey of some grey herons as well.
