The Perfumes of Carthusia are a symbol of Capri, one of the most fascinating places regarding the artistic perfumery and one of the smallest laboratories of fragrances.
Exclusive essences extracted by the selection of the island’s flowers. It is an ancient tradition.
According to legends, the prior of the San Gerolamo’s charterhouse of Capri (1380) was surprised by the arrival of the queen Giovanna of Anjou, but he prepared a collection of the most beautiful flowers of the island; those flowers remained for three days in the same water and when it was time to throw them away he realised that the water had acquired a mysterious fragrance, because of this he asked for the opinion of a religious erudite in alchemy, who is able to identify its origin in the “Garofilum silvestre caprese“. Thar water was the first perfume of Capri.
According to history, the prior of the charterhouse (1948) found the ancient formulas of the perfumes and he revealed them to Piedmontese chemist after receiving a licence from the Pope. He created the smallest laboratory of the world and called it  “Carthusia” which stands for “Charterhouse”.
Nowadays, the tradition is continued and the manufacturing methods are still the ones of the friars; all the mixtures are based on natural and high-quality raw materials and also the packaging is hand made. The essences extracted from rosemary collected on Monte Solaro are the base of men perfumes, while wild poppies are the base for the ones of women.
