Chiesa Rossa Park

Located in the southern part of Milan, along via Chiesa Rossa, this park borders the Naviglio Pavese and represents an important rural complex consisting of five buildings: the church – formerly called Santa Maria di Fontigo and dating back to the X-XII century – the Rectory, the Portico, and the former stable 328-ft long, typical of the XVII century local architecture, now used as a library. All these buildings have been recently recovered and dedicated to several public activities. During the excavations for the recovery of the church, in 1966, the remains of a building considered of the pre-Christian era were found.

The park stretches along some 7.5 acres and is completely fenced. It was built in the 70s, and until 1980 there used to be a large green space around the ancient ruins. During the architectural recovery of the latter, some pedestrian lanes and a fountain were built; the existing children’s area was enlarged, and the orchard (also called “the labyrinth”) was completed with new trees and shrubs. Today, there are apricots, persimmons, black mulberries, apple trees, loquats, poplars, rowans, and arugula. Visitors can also enjoy a basketball court, a dog area, and a water dispenser.
