The oasis is located in a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT8030007) in the municipalities of Pozzuoli and Naples, it is formed by a dormant volcano, which is part of the more complex Agnano’s crater, Phlegrean Fields volcanic area.
It was established by the Ministry of the Environment in 1987 and it is managed by WWF Italy. Its extension is of 247 hectares, and the perimeter is 6.5 km long. There are three hills (Imperatrice, Rotondella, Pagliaroni) inside the crater, which occupy the majority of the surface. The south-western area is plain with three little ponds (the major is called “Lago Grande”), rich in animal and vegetable species.
The Fauna includes migratory and sedentary birds such as blackcaps, blackbirds, sparrows, chaffinches, great tits, jays, woodpeckers and grey herons; buzzards, sparrow hawks, kestrels, tawny owls, peregrine falcons, barn owls and owls are the predatory birds present in the oasis
There are also foxes, badgers, weasels, hedgehogs, hazel mice and dormice.
The vegetation is characterised by the presence of chestnut trees (Castanea sativa), English oaks (Quercus robur), white hornbeams (Carpinus betulus), black hornbeams (Ostrya carpinifolia), oriental hornbeams (Carpinus orientalis), Ulmus minor, field maples (Acer campestre), Fraxinus ornus, Robinia pseudoacacia, American red oaks (Quercus rubra), Canadian poplars (Populus canadensis), aspens (Populus tremula), holm oaks (Quercus ilex), tree heaths (Erica arborea), myrtles (Myrtus spp.), strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo), Pistacia lentiscus, privets (Ligustrum vulgare), Goat Willow (Salix caprea), marsh grass (Phragmites australis) and white water-lilies (Nymphaea alba).

The oasis has been closed since 9th  December 2014.
