De Viti De Marco Castle

This castle is located in the ancient village of Casamassella, Uggiano La Chiesa, in the Province of Lecce. It dates back to the XIII century when Charles of Anjou was the local ruler, although they’ve been several structural modifications over the centuries.
The current appearance is that of an ancient stronghold but the deep moat and the drawbridge have disappeared, as well as the new entrances and some windows.
In 1700, the building became an elegant noble residence that would welcome several important guests including Benedetto Croce and the poet-essayist Girolamo Comi.
This place, where medieval and XVIII century architecture coexists, also offers an English garden featuring some evocative sights of the castle and the towers.
About 2.5-acre wide, the garden houses many interesting plants, such as Citrus spp., Rose spp., Parthenocissus spp., bougainvillaeas and palms, as well as the rare Quercus ithaburensis.
Since 1969, the residence has no longer been owned by the De Viti De Marco family; the new owners have turned it into a tourist resort.
