Fontecchio Spa

The thermal baths of Fontecchio are located in the municipality of Città di Castello, in the Upper Valley of the Umbrian-Tuscan stretch of the Tiber River. They are the only historical complex in Umbria, with the spa appreciated since the time of Pliny the Younger and also enjoyed by his young wife Calpurnia. The baths were re-discovered around 1860 and a few years later they were fitted with the current Renaissance style facility, designed by the architect Guglielmo Calderini from Perugia.

The special treatments offered here are based on the use of water coming from two sources: one tends to be rich in magnesium, the other has a high content of sulphur: both of them offer great anti-inflammatory, purifying, and digestive effects, while they’re also used for osteoarticular rehab, vascular, otolaryngology, dermatological, and hydroponic treatments.

The two springs can be reached within the thermal park, thanks to a path surrounded by luxuriant vegetation. The spa complex also includes the ancient Convent Hermitage of the Capuchins dating back to 1500, recently renovated and standing among a 62-acre wood and other natural springs. The latter include the “Capuchin” spring, with oligo-mineral waters.
