Forest Botanical Garden of Abetone – Collection of violets and undergrowth flowers
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
The path that goes across the different habitats of the species growing this Botanical Garden (3.459 acres at 4.265 ft above sea level) gives visitors the opportunity to explore the environments and the flora typical of the Pistoiese Apennines.
The rocky terrain features the silver geranium, Geranium argenteum and several species of Saxifraga. The few wetlands are home to the carnivorous plant Pinguicola christianae; in the prairies there is the great yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea), and the columbine (Aquilegia lucensis), typical of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
Along the “path of mushrooms, medicinal and poisonous plants”, visitors can discover and learn how to recognize dangerous species such as belladonna (Atropa belladonna), and mezereum (Daphne mezereum) or taste the delicious fruits of the wild blueberry (Vaccinum myrtillus).
