State Forest of Funtanamela

This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)

Funtanamela State forest covers 1.228 acres in the central area of Sardinia, on the border between the provinces of Oristano and Nuoro. The vegetation is mostly made of holm oaks, mastic trees, phillyrea, cistus, juniper, and strawberry trees.

In 1998, Corsican red deers were reintroduced in the forest. The local fauna also includes several Sarcidano horses. Visitors may also enjoy the XIX century lime kilns and the several coal threshing floors (flat areas where wood is charred in charcoal pits in the open air, then scattered throughout the territory).
