Freidano Ecomuseum is in Settimo Torinese (Turin). Its construction started 1997 and it is named after the Freidano River, the most important commercial route for at least 500 years: probably traced in the late Middle Ages, on an abandoned riverbed of the Po River, it is still marked by some ancient mills, including “Mulino Vecchio”, “Mulino Nuovo” and “Mulino dell’Isola” towards Settimo Torinese, as well as “Mulino Re” in Brandizzo.
“Mulino Nuovo” and “Mulino Re”, in particular, were the first mills in Piedmont fitted with the “Anglo-American” system, introduced by Emilio Benso, Count of Cavour in 1850.
“Mulino Nuovo” in Settimo Torinese was eventually chosen as the headquarters of the Freidano Ecomuseum.
The Ecomuseum offers multiple initiatives and intense research activities related to the culture of the territory, the recovery of the archaeological-industrial heritage and its enhancement.
The exhibition area is organized along cycle-pedestrian paths equipped with panels, multimedia totems and real contraptions that have made the history of hydraulic engineering.
The overall goal is to highlight the difficult relationship between man and the environment, as well as water and energy, with particular regard to future choices related to research and the use of renewable energy sources.
