Gamberini Orchid Greenhouse

This greenhouse can be found between Ostuni and Cisternino (BA), within an olive grove of some 5 acres, at 918 ft above sea level. It was created by Daniele Gamberini, from Bologna, and Margherita Viola, from Friuli, who met each other and then got married thanks to their passion for orchids.

The greenhouse, some 300 square-yard wide, features an aluminium structure, glass walls and a polycarbonate roof; it is surrounded by a beautiful garden made of Mediterranean plants such as rosemary, strawberry trees, sage, cistus, mastic tree and myrtles, as well as several exotic species belonging to the genera Protea, Acacia, Dasyliron, Bahunia, Grevillea, and Erythrina.

Divided into warm, intermediate and cold zones, the greenhouse also hosts an impressive collection of more than 1.000 orchids, some of the very rare and coming from all over the world. Those beautiful flowers have been planted in painstakingly created environments, as much similar as possible to their original ones. Among the orchids, there are also over a hundred Tillandsia, several Hoyas and begonias.

Thanks to Ferruccio Carassale for the beautiful pictures.
