Excerpt from “Gardens of Veneto Villas”, by Camilla Zanarotti, Silvana Editoriale.

The large palace, which belonged to the Dolfin family from San Trovaso in the fifteenth century, probably owes its current appearance to a late sixteenth-century design by Vincenzo Scamozzi. It was purchased by Giuseppe Marchiori in 1843. Domenico Marchiori, son of Giuseppe and great-great-grandfather of the current owners, followed his artistic vocation and dedicated himself to painting and creating these extraordinary landscaped gardens. They were expertly designed as a series of episodes that his guests could follow by boat, along a waterborne route. This route begins with the caves, which are followed by the Fisherman’s Cabin, the Roman ruins, the so-called “cavana” (“boat shelter”), the Japanese House and the Chinese Pagoda.

A monumental neo-Gothic gateway gives way to a majestic avenue lined with hornbeam trees that leads to the lake. The scene is dominated by a neo-Gothic tower, the door of which provides access to the icehouse. Back towards the palace, you will come across the Island of Poetry, a formal garden surrounded by water and decorated by old trimmed yew trees and two elegant neo-classical greenhouses.

The gardens highlight the expert use of botanical species that produce extraordinary plays of perspective and refined colour combinations throughout the seasons.
