Garzaia di Valenza Nature Reserve is included in the territory of Piedmont Po River Park. Set on a river branch no longer fed by water, rich in reeds, willow and alder woods, it was established in 1979 by Piedmont Region to protect the only regional colony of red herons and other similar species that usually nest there.
The best time of the year for birdwatching is from May to June. Eurasian bitterns and little bitterns have also been abundantly observed: they’re two non-colonial species linked to the reed environment.
Furthermore, the local fauna is rich in varieties of nocturnal birds of prey such as owls, tawny owls, little owls, barn owls, as well as diurnal marsh harriers and buzzards.
The local flora includes some rare species typical of the marsh ecosystem, such as white-water lilies (Nymphaea alba), yellow lilies (Nuphar lutea), Hydrocharis morsus -ranae, and Carolina mosquitofern (Azolla caroliniana).
