Hoak Forest Nature Reserve of Niscemi
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
This reserve protects what remains of a large forest of holm oaks and downy oaks, including the evergreen shrubs typical of the Mediterranean scrub-forest. The extraordinary wood of the past, unfortunately, is no longer there but there are still interesting environments where mastic, carob, olive, myrtle, strawberry trees, Phillyrea and European fan palms grow and thrive.
The fertile and bright undergrowth is populated by a variegated fauna that includes wild cats, foxes, dormice, and garden dormice. In the woods, there are many nests of passerine birds (of the Sylviidae family), great spotted woodpeckers, and hoopoes.
