Hotel Cocumella is the most ancient hotel of Sant’Agnello and it became a Jesuits residence in 1597. A school of Latin grammar was established in the house. The building was completed only in 1637 and comprehended a wide courtyard surrounded by a colonnade; rooms were present on three sides, while on the fourth there was a terrace which offered to the inhabitants a marvellous view of the gulf of Naples. A well was present at the centre of the courtyard which still exists and was built to substitute a cistern of ancient Rome where merge the water coming from the hills of the Equa area. After that it became an elegant aristocratic residence which was then transformed into the first hotel of Sant’Agnello in the 19th century, where many well-known artists and writers stayed over-night. It is an island of peace thanks to its secular park, which reaches the sea, next to the centre of Sorrento. According to legends the gods entrusted the custody of the garden to the nymph “Colomeide”, who would have offered silence as a gift to all the garden’s visitors. The wide park in the style of Vanvitelli presents a great variety of rare-exotic plants and there is a citrus grove.
