“Lago dei Cavalli”, or Lake Alpe dei Cavalli (also known as Lake Cheggio), is an artificial basin in the municipality of Antrona Scheranco, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.
Located at 4.888 ft above sea level, it was created by barring a plateau with a dam, called “Alpe Cavalli”, built between 1922 and 1926, with dry stone. Its waters feed the hydroelectric power station of Rovesca.

The lake can be found within the Antrona Valley Natural Park; with its bright green waters, it’s a popular destination for leisure walks, suitable all ages and pets.
The shady path is 3-hour long and features some 980 ft. elevation difference.
The best time to visit this lake is between June and October.

How to get there:

Park the car at the end of the road to Alpe Cheggio (just before the dam), and take the path on the right, which climbs rapidly – the following part features a modest slope though.
Along the right side (north-east) of the lake the path gets a bit narrow, while on the left (south-west), from the dam to Alpe del Gabbio, it gets wide and much easier to tackle.
