Limonaia Prà de la Fam Ecomuseum

This ecomuseum is all about local lemon groves dating back to the XIII century and, particular, their peculiar architecture designed to protect the plantations during the quite harsh winter months.
The greenhouse offers different exploration routes, along with a special “observatory”. The structure was built by the lake, among rock formations and surrounded by centuries-old cypress trees (Cupressus spp.).
This is the first example of a museum created by the Mountain Community of the “Alto Garda Bresciano Park” which, in 1985, began the restoration of the three southernmost coles (plants of the Brassica genus) in the New Garden.
After a thorough cleaning, consolidation of the structures and the removal of weeds, the fixed covering elements were restored and the windows and doors facing the sun were rebuilt as the ancient original ones. The traditionally well-protected lemon grove was eventually fit with lighting, automatic irrigation and an air heating system.
80 citrus plants were thus planted, such as lemons (Citrus x limon), mandarin oranges (Citrus reticulata) and bergamot oranges (Citrus × bergamia), arranged according to the traditional layout and supported by an original wooden framework.
