According to a local tradition, the name “Lizza dei Briganti” was given to this holm oak because some brigands used to gather near the trunk of this majestic tree; the latter grows in Vernole, a town in the province of Lecce, in the Salento territory.
This holm oak, Quercus ilex , is classified as one of the “Monumental Trees of Puglia”, thanks to its size but also to its historical, cultural and religious value. Its trunk reaches a circumference of 13.6 ft, while this beautiful specimen soars to a height of 75.5 ft.
