The Marganai Forest is located in the territories of Iglesias, Domusnovas, and Fluminimaggiore. It features a rich fauna and many endemic animal species, therefore it is a popular destination for tourists and scholars.

Purchased by the Region in 1979, the Marganai State Forest has retained very evocative features despite human interventions (such as intense mining); its scenic beauty still appears quite pristine and it’s considered an area of particular landscape interest, within the “Monte Linas, Marganai-Oridda, Montimannu” territory.

This forest includes the “Linasia” Mountain Garden, created for scientific-educational purposes and representing the priceless botanical heritage of this area. Marganai is, in fact, a “living” laboratory for studying and monitoring the Mediterranean forest ecosystem, also featuring a recently built “Garden of Butterflies”.

The holm oak is the most widespread species in Marganai forest, although there are also remains of hollies and maples.

Following recent fires, settlement of secondary scrub formations have appeared over areas with shallow soils, exposed to prevailing winds. The local flora includes several endemic species, which have survived throughout the centuries thanks to the clear geological differences with the surrounding territories.
