Mastrojanni Farm

Mastrojanni farm is located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the extreme south-east of the Municipality of Montalcino, in the province of Siena.
Ranked among the most traditional businesses in the area, it was established in 1975 and today it is part of the “Illy Spa holding group”. It covers 237 acres, including its wooded part and 82 reserved to the vineyards – more than a half of the latter produce Brunello wine, aged from 8 to 41 years. This very part of the estate is opposite Monte Amiata and Val d’Orcia, in one of the most beautiful areas in Tuscany.
The farm is managed by Andrea Machetti, an experienced traditional farmer who’s also well-aware of the importance of modern innovations and ground-breaking techniques. He strives to constantly improve the quality of his products, rather than his own profit.
The vineyards and the wine cellars are therefore managed according to sensible criteria and state-of-the-art techniques.
The very wine cellars have been recently enlarged and improved with true bio-architecture in mind: for instance, in one section the temperature and the humidity are regulated by a cavity in direct contact with the living rock.
The result of all these painstaking efforts is an excellent choice of wines of rare quality and elegance, long-lasting and highly refined, never made for mere pleasure.
Among the vines, Sangiovese is the absolute protagonist: it is found in Brunello, Rosso, Loreto and Schiena d’Asino “cru”, the latter produced only in extraordinary years. Among the other wines, there are the IGT San Pio, a harmonious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, the Moscadello di Montalcino from late harvests, and Botrys, a blend of Moscato, Malvasia di Candia and Sauvignon Blanc.
On the estate, there are several monumental oaks, one in particular downstream of the Loreto farm, which struggles to survive after being struck by lightning 20 years ago.
Stefano Lorenzi and his team of professionals (SIA certified arborists and tree climbers) take painstaking care of all the resident tree specimens.
The old village on the estate has also recently been restored and turned into a most quaint Relais, perfectly integrated into the beautiful landscape.
