The herbs museum with Viridarium was opened in 1999 and it is located in the heart of Teggiano’s old-town, province of Salerno. It is completely dedicated to botany and ethno-botany and it develops in different sections: the area of ethno-botany is represented by the so called “L’antica spezieria medievale” which is the reconstruction of the historical workshop of the spice seller of Diano from 1480, where numerous spices of vegetal, mineral and animal origins are exposed, together with areas related to folk medicine and herbs for domestic use, plants and wood for craftsmanship, magical herbs. There is also a section dedicated to natural medicine, pharmaceutical preparations and herbal medicine. A seed bank treasures all the ancient germplasm of the internal areas of the province of Salerno and a natural Herbarium contains the floristic papers and classifications. There is also a display case with modern phytotherapy, aromatherapy, gemmotherapy and flower therapy preparations and mother tinctures, essential oils and Bach flowers. There is also an outdoor space, the Viridarium, created to enclose all the local essences (native flora plants of Cilento’s National Park and Vallo di Diano), and the ones with medicinal characteristics used in the medieval fortified towns, which were essential during sieges.
