The WWF’s Oasis Pantano of Pignola is one of the regional environments with the highest biotic diversity. It is located in the municipality of Pignola, in the province of Potenza, in a Site of Community Importance and special protection area.
The whole oasis extends for 155 hectares, 750 meters above the sea level, around a lake which originates from an artificial dike in an area surrounded by lawns and cultivations, which was originally swampy and only successively reclaimed. The different levels of depth allowed the development of different ecological niches. The vegetation is dense, rich and varied, with numerous rushes, Thypha spp., reeds (Juncus effusus), black poplars (Populus nigra), alders (Alnus spp.), red and white willows (Salix alba e Salix purpurea), and many shrub-like species. Not only many mammals live here, like foxes, weasels, martens, but also numerous water and non-water birds like swans, little egrets and mallards.
